Kiritappu Wetland of Animals

- About 280 birds species have been recorded in the wetland including Steller's Sea Eagle Haliaeetus pelagicus, White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla, Bean Goose Anser fabalis, Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus, and Brant Branta bernicla. A great number of Anatidae and swans visit the mire in spring and autumn. In addition, the site is an important habitat for Red crowned Crane Grus japonensis, a Special National Natural Monument designated by the government, and thus joins the North East Asian Crane Site Network.

- Adjacent to forests, Kiritappu Wetland provides a habitat also for mammals such as Yezo Deer Cervus nippon yesoensis, Brown Bear Ursus arctos, Red Fox Vulpes vulpes schrencki, and Eurosian Red Squirrel Sciurus vulgaris orientis.
